Adding our voice to general issues
Proposal
The Women’s Right Party adds our voice to issues of concern to New Zealanders, including the climate, the environment, conservation, animal welfare, social and economic inequality and poverty.
Rationale
While the primary focus of the Women’s Rights Party is protecting the rights of women and children and advocating for our sex-based rights, we do need to comment from time to time on issues that affect all New Zealanders and do impact on women and our future generations. These issues are of particular concern to young people who we would also like to attract to our Party.
Adding Our Voice may mean we support positions raised by other political parties or organisations. It becomes significant if and when the Women’s Rights Party has a presence in Parliament, especially if we are in a position to negotiate a Coalition agreement with one or more other political parties.
The need to have the ability to respond to broader current issues is important for candidates during Election campaigns. Where candidates are given questions in advance, it is useful for them to seek guidance from the co-Leaders on appropriate responses.
NGOs like Forest and Bird will seek our position on issues like the environment, conservation and animal welfare. Others like Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) or the Calition for Equal Value, Equal Pay (CEVEP) will be more interested in our positions in relation to economic inequity and poverty. Such organisations typically publish tables of policies that align with the interests of their constituents. This can broaden our appeal at the ballot box.
The Council is responsible for making statements on behalf of the Party and works to ensure that any such statements preserve our unity.
